Teaching English in the United Kingdom - Summer Camps 2009!
If you are new to TEFL and have a few weeks to spare in July or August, this is a fantastic opportunity to get some TEFL experience under your belt! If you are interested in helping foreign students to improve their English and want to earn a bit of extra cash, then teaching at a Summer Camp in the UK could be for you!
Recommended Training
You can apply for a UK Summer Camp position with a 60 hour Online TEFL course. However, we do recommend you complete i-to-i's 100 hour Online or 120 hour Weekend TEFL course which are our most comprehensive TEFL courses. Increasing the number of hours of study will give you more confidence and allow you to get the most out of your teaching experience.
The Employment Basics
- Requirements: You must be a native English speaker with an EU passport, have at least a 60 hour TEFL qualification and be over 18 years of age.
- Salary: You can earn up to $390* per week.
- Camp duration: 2 weeks (9 teaching days) in July and August 2009. You can stay longer by completing more than one camp session.

What can you expect at Summer Camps in the United Kingdom?
- Salary: Earn up to $390* per week.
- Camp duration: 2 weeks (9 teaching days). You can stay longer by completing more than one camp session.
- Food and Accommodation: If you require food and accommodation, this will cost £35 per camp session. Accommodation will be in single rooms in boarding schools.
- Start dates: There are various start dates throughout July and August. You can state the dates you are available and your preferred teaching location on your application form. Details will be confirmed later in the application process.
- Student Age Range: You will be teaching students from age 8 to 17.
- Teaching:You will be teaching in well-resourced schools.
- Locations: Bideford, Farnham, Hampshire, Plymouth, Repton, Newton Abbot, Callington, Bruton, Barnstaple, Falmouth, Rugby, Ayr, St Austell.

Requirements for UK Summer Camps
- Native English speaker with an EU passport.
- TEFL qualification (60 hour TEFL course required).
- University degree not necessary, but would be an advantage.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills and the willingness to be flexible.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Criminal record check.
Frequently Asked Questions About Teaching in the UK
1. What age and level of students will I be teaching?
You will be teaching English to students from age 8 to 17. Most of the students will be French and will range in level from beginner to advanced.
2. How many students will there be in each class?
There will be 8-12 students in each class.
3. How long are the classes?
Classes last 45 minutes.
4. Are there any teaching resources?
There will be resources available to you, but you are encouraged to bring your own.
5. What are the teaching aims?
The overall teaching aim is to improve the students’ ability to communicate in English. Teachers will be given guidelines for the course structure. Our partners require teachers to have a creative approach which will enable the students to enjoy their learning, rather than a course-book only approach.
6. What are the key duties as a Summer Camp Teacher?
You will be responsible for the following:
- Meet with the Senior Tutor at least once before the course starts to plan the teaching strategy. Teachers are also expected to attend a brief daily meeting with the Senior Tutor to co-ordinate work and discuss any problems.
- Become familiar with the excursions planned so you are able to teach useful language in class in relation to the rest of the programme.
- Build up a good rapport with the French Group Leaders to gain a better understanding of students and their progress.
- Support and assist students’ language learning by preparing dynamic and communicative English classes that are within the guidelines of the course.
- Ensure that you are punctual, dressed appropriately and that the students are happy!
7. What kind of school will I be teaching in?
You will be teaching in boarding schools.

1. How much will I be paid?
You can earn up to $390* per week. You will be paid as follows:
- 3 x 45 minute classes per day = £28.27 per teaching day
- 4 x 45 minute classes per day = £37.69 per teaching day
- 5 x 45 minute classes per day = £47.11 per teaching day
2. What are my working hours?
Teachers will work five days per week and will be free at weekends. Classes normally start at 9.00 am and finish at lunchtime. You will teach 3 to 5 classes per day, each class will last 45 minutes. Afternoons and evenings will be free. No boarding duties are required as the students will be supervised by their own Group Leaders from France.
3. Can I extend my contract?
Yes, if vacancies are available and you wish to stay longer than first planned.
4. Is accommodation provided?
If you live more than 20 miles from a centre and wish to be a residential staff member, our partners can provide food and accommodation for £35 per camp session. Your accommodation will be in single rooms in boarding schools.
If you live within 20 miles from a centre, our partners cannot provide food and accommodation. Unfortunately, our partners cannot pay travel costs for teachers to travel from their homes to the centre.
5. How does the recruitment process work?
- Once you have applied for a position, you should submit the application form and a passport photo by email.
- Our partners will review your documents and contact you for a telephone interview which will allow you to discuss the dates you are available.
- Our partners will then confirm whether your application has been successful. Once your references have been checked, you will be sent a contract to sign.
- Our partners will provide you with more information about the course syllabus, lesson plans, teaching ideas, maps and checklists.
