Country Guides: Ukraine

Ukraine means “borderland”, and this ex-Soviet state truly is on the border of the east and west – so close to Russia, yet striving for membership to the EU. It has enjoyed being one of Europe’s most powerful kingdoms, endured having six million of its people starved to death by Stalin, and is today a bold and spirited nation exemplified by its national anthem, “Ukraine Has Not Yet Died”.

With such contradictions comes a variety of fascinating sights. Travel south and you’ll find the beautiful port city of Odesa, in the west is cultured Lviv, and cosmopolitan Kyiv is the heart of the country.
