Country Guides: Hungary

Hungary upholds a legacy of cultural treasures from being all too often in the eye of encroaching empires. It was the Magyars, a nomadic tribe that laid the country's foundations but ultimately fell to Turkish and Austrian rule, and more recently communism ruled the country's political landscape.

It's achieved stability and the status as a top tourist destination since moving towards a democratic society with the fall of communism in 1989. Budapest is just one of its crowning glories and is on par with European cities such as Paris for cosmopolitan chic and historic charm.
