Country Guides: Colombia
Though it may not have the obvious allure of other South American countries, Colombia is by no means lacking in natural wonders and spectacular attractions. Its dark side of drugs, civil war and kidnappings have long been in the media spotlight but visitor numbers are tentatively rising, and the government is taking steps to make it more visitor-friendly by increasing police presence in cities and tourist areas.
This eclectic corner of South America is the only country to boast Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, making for some stunning beaches. What’s more, it is home to dynamic landscapes from snowy peaks to Amazon rainforest, as well as tropical islands. At the heart of the country is its diverse population made up of European, African and Indigenous people, most notably visible in the capital Bogotá.
