A Guide to Teaching English in Vietnam

Vietnam somehow manages to be way off the beaten TEFL track and still offer loads of TEFL jobs with decent wages. Significant foreign investment, a pretty major oil boom, increased tourism and the growth of a young and affluent middle class are the main reasons why the number of TEFL jobs in Vietnam has grown so much in recent years.

TEFL Jobs in Vietnam

Vietnam’s recent economic growth has lead to a demand for qualified English teachers with recognised TEFL certificates. So be warned: a passport from a native English speaking country is no longer enough to land yourself a TEFL job in Vietnam! That being said, there are a growing number of business English teaching jobs, as well as more traditional jobs teaching English in Vietnamese state and private schools, so the investment in proper TEFL training will probably prove worthwhile.

Wages and Cost of Living

With a respected TEFL certificate, you should be able to land a TEFL job offering somewhere in the region of $15 an hour for private teaching. When you combine that with a low cost of living (we’re talking a great meal out with a few drinks and a tuk-tuk home for less than $10), you’re on to a winner.

TEFL Cities in Vietnam

These are our top three places to teach English in Vietnam. They all offer something a little different, but they have a couple of things in common too: a high demand for TEFL teachers and loads of TEFL jobs.

TEFL Jobs in Hanoi

It’s hard to find a more perfect capital city in all of Asia than Hanoi. It manages to hold on to its traditions and retain much of its historic architecture while still embracing modernity and rushing headlong into a neon-bright future. There are loads of good TEFL jobs in Hanoi too.

TEFL Jobs in Ho Chi Minh City

Some people call it Ho Chi Minh City, others call it Saigon. But whatever you call it, it’s a real assault on the senses. From five star luxury to street corner food stalls, HCMC has something to suit every taste - as well as loads of TEFL jobs.

TEFL Jobs in the Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is one of the most beautiful areas of Vietnam: traditional wooden dhows plying their trade along lush green waterways, sleepy villages, bustling cities and more rice fields than you can shake a chopstick at. And in recent years there has been a huge increase in the number of TEFL jobs in the Mekong Delta too.
