A Guide to Teaching English in Thailand

For people who regard quality of life as more important than how much you earn, Thailand is perhaps Asia's top TEFL job destination. There are plenty of jobs, the wages are pretty good, the cost of living is low and teaching English in Thailand allows TEFLers to explore the whole of South East Asia. Add that to the fact that Thai people are genuinely outgoing and welcoming and it's easy to see why Thailand is such a top destination for TEFL jobs.

TEFL Jobs in Thailand

Thailand is one of the world’s top tourist destinations and the number of tourists is still on the rise. This growth in tourism, and the comparative wealth it affords those who manage to jump onboard the gravy train, has led to an ever-increasing demand for trained people to teach English in Thailand. Most cities and towns have at least one English language school, while bigger urban centres such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Bangkok have hundreds: so wherever you are in the country, you should be able to sniff out a TEFL job or two.

Wages and Cost of Living

Obviously how much you can earn teaching English in Thailand depends on your level of training and experience, but with a degree, a respected TEFL qualification and all the relevant paperwork you can expect to earn a starting salary of around 25,000 Baht (US$800) a month and that could go as high as 60,000 (US$1,850) depending on your experience and the location of the school. Living in Thailand is pretty cheap. A decent apartment in Bangkok would maybe set you back 7,000 Baht (US210) a month and the day to day living costs are minimal if you eat street food, avoid imported goods and stay away from the expensive Western night spots.

TEFL Cities in Thailand

These are our top three TEFL destinations for teaching English in Thailand. They all offer something a little different, but each has one thing in common: a high demand for TEFL teachers and loads of TEFL jobs.

TEFL Jobs in Bangkok

Bangkok is home to a huge and well organised TEFL industry. There are thousands of language schools across the city, as well as TEFL jobs in universities, state schools and private business colleges. The huge ex-pat community in the Thai capital allied with its reputation as one of the world’s most exciting and open cities, means it’s a great place to start teaching English in Thailand.

TEFL Jobs in Chiang Mai

People from all over Northern Thailand and Laos come to Chiang Mai to learn English. Many of them do so because they hope to get involved in the ever growing tourist industry and make a better life for themselves. So it’s a great place to find work teaching English. Chiang Mai is a charming place and alive with backpackers and travellers from around the world. It’s also a great jumping off point for travels and extreme sports adventuring in the northern hill country and the waterways of the Mekong.

TEFL Jobs in Phuket

Think of Phuket and one thing should spring to mind: tourism. A growing number of language schools have sprung up in the city in order to meet the demands of the tourist resorts around Phuket province and on the islands of Phi Phi and Lanta. All of which means, you’ll be able to work at your TEFL job during the week and explore the beaches of Southern Thailand in your time off. Perfect!
