A Guide to Teaching English in China

If the 20th Century was an American Century, then the 21st looks set to belong to China. But rather than making everyone else learn Chinese, they've decided to learn English, which is great news if you want to teach English in China! There are an estimated 400 million people learning English in China, so there are always loads of TEFL jobs to be had.

TEFL Jobs in China

China has well and truly opened its doors to the world and thousands of people travel there every year in search of TEFL jobs. The restrictive bureaucracy of the past has lessened so getting the relevant work permits and finding a job and a place to stay is usually pretty straightforward.

Wages and Cost of Living

How much you can earn and how much you’ll need to get by on will depend on your level of training, how much experience you have and where you're teaching. With a respected TEFL certificate and little or no previous experience of teaching English abroad you can expect to earn around 3,500RMB a month (£330 or US$500). That would rise to nearer 9,000RMB (£850 or US$1300) for more experienced teachers. Unless you choose to rent a penthouse apartment in the coolest part of downtown Hong Kong, Beijing or Shanghai, China is a very cheap place to live.

TEFL Cities in China

These are our top three TEFL destinations in China. They all offer something a little different, but each has one thing in common: a high demand for TEFL teachers and loads of TEFL jobs.

TEFL Jobs in Beijing

China’s capital is one of the country’s main centres for international business. So there are loads of TEFL jobs and is a large, and very sociable, ex-pat community that will make the transition to living and teaching English in China that little bit easier. Wages are a little higher in Beijing than in other areas of the country, and if you find yourself a shared apartment and steer clear of the posh western stores on Qian Men Street, you should be able to live pretty comfortable and really enjoy your time teaching English in China.

TEFL Jobs in Shanghai

Shanghai was opened up to international trade back in 1842 by the Treaty of Nanking, and it hasn't looked back since. You’re now more likely to see sparkling glass skyscrapers and neon-light nightscapes than imperial places and ramshackle neighbourhoods. Shanghai now boasts the world's largest cargo port and is considered to be the most important financial and commercial centre in mainland China. So there are lots of TEFL jobs to be found and lots of opportunities to teach business English.

TEFL Jobs in Kunming

Kunming is the capital of the southeastern province of Yunnan – so it’s a great place to do a little border-hoping into to Laos and Vietnam (or if you’re feeling really adventurous, Burma). On a more practical note, the city is the political, economic, communications and cultural centre of the province and home to all the key corporate and government institutions. So there are loads of TEFL jobs, and although wages aren’t as high as in Beijing, neither is the cost of living. Which means you should be able to live pretty well by teaching English in Kunming, especially if you have a recognised TEFL certificate.
