Frequently Asked Questions
- What age and level of students will I be teaching?
You will be teaching adults at all levels.
- How many students will there be in each class?
Classes could be made up of 1 - 8 students, depending on the type of course.
- How long are the classes?
Most classes are 90 minutes long.
- Are there any teaching resources?
Yes. The institute is well-resourced – there is a study room, library and internet access.
- Is there any training before the teaching contract begins?
Every new teacher must complete a training program which consists of 4 compulsory workshops. Every teacher can then attend optional workshops meeting his/her needs which are run on a weekly basis. After completing 4 optional workshops the teacher is given a certificate for their newly acquired skills.
- Will I be teaching alone or team teaching?
You will be teaching alone, but you will have support from other teachers, mostly from your Senior Teacher.
- What kind of school will I be teaching in?
You will be teaching in a private language school located in the old historical centre. You may also be required to teach individuals or groups in other locations which could be anywhere in Prague.
- How much will I be paid?
Earn from 21,600 Czech Koruna ($1200*) per month based on an 18 hour week. You will have the opportunity to increase the number of classes you teach and you could earn up to 35,000 Czech Koruna ($1940*) per month. Tax of 15%-25% will be payable locally, dependent on earnings.
- It is recommended that teachers share an apartment close to the centre in a location such as Letna or Vinohrady (approximately 7-15 minutes by metro or tram). The price here is around 6,000CZK per month for a private room in a shared house (a deposit may be required). Accommodation in the city centre is more expensive.
- The cost of living after rent should generally be 9,000CZK ($480*) per month although this will depend on your lifestyle.
- For transportation, most teachers purchase a monthly pass for 550CZK. This pass allows you to travel freely around the city on any form of transportation. As a teacher you can expect to be on the public transport system several times a day making the monthly pass worth the expense. These costs are reimbursed to full time teachers.
- Groceries are inexpensive and in most restaurants an average meal including a beer costs about 150CZK. It is interesting to note that a small glass of soda is typically more expensive than a big glass of excellent beer!
- Do I receive a bonus or flight re-imbursement?
There is no bonus or flight reimbursement.
- How many holiday days will I receive per year?
No paid holidays are provided with this contract. If you wish to take an unpaid holiday you should give at least 2 weeks' notice. If you would like to take a longer holiday (e.g. 2 weeks or more) please try to give 1 month's notice. There is a shut-down over all bank holidays. For Christmas, usually from Dec 22nd - Jan 3rd but very often a longer break can be arranged with the school (usually Dec 20th - Jan 5th). For Easter it is the date of Bank Holiday plus 1-2 days.
- What are my working hours?
Your teaching contract will be for 18 hours per week (full time). Classes are held between 7:30am and 7:30pm, usually Monday to Friday. However, most classes take place in the morning and early afternoon.
- How does the recruitment process work?
- Send required documents to i-to-i.
- Once documents have been submitted, our partner in the Czech Republic will contact you for a skype interview. If you are successful, they will look for suitable teaching positions.
- You will travel to the Czech Republic for a face to face final interview.
- If successful you will sign a contract with the school you will be teaching at and you can start teaching immediately.
- Can I renew my contract?
Your contract may be extendable; you would need to discuss this with your school.
- What happens if I need to break my contract?
You should give 2 months' notice if you wish to break your contract.
- Who is my contract with?
The contract you sign will be with the language school or institute that you will be teaching at, not with i-to-i or with our overseas partner. This means that if you have any complaints regarding your teaching placement you will need to take the matter up with the language school or institute and not with i-to-i.
