Q. Why do some countries require a degree to teach English?

Category: Finding A TEFL Job

A. Answer:

One word: visas. Some countries, such as Japan, will only give working visas to those who have a degree, so if you don't have one schools won't be able to hire you. So, check visa regulations before setting your heart on a particular TEFL destination. Schools in countries where degrees are not required for visa reasons may also put a degree down as a 'must-have', but in fact may be willing to compromise for the right candidate, so don't despair just yet!
