I recently read a quote by a famous person but I can't remember who!

When travelling, lay out all your clothes and all your money, then take half the clothes and twice the money.

good advice!

A few decent toothpastes and deoderants that you like.

Also, bring a few pairs of shoes if your feet are quite big.

Oh, and things not to bring, as long as you're in a fairly large place are: standard toiletries, a towel, too many accessories and most electronics (I brought my laptop and a phone, but I only brought the phone because I had to). I don't know about China, but I'm sure like Korea, you can buy most other things out there (although I don't know how sim cards and contracts work there).

Any dry food from home that you love. I live in Korea, but things I need are gravy granuals, bullion (stock) cubes, herbs and spices and specialist baking ingredients. Lots of people also bring the tea they're used to (but I've never been that fussy). Books! I know they're heavy, but I would bring as many as you can. I definitely second the shoes and clothes thing. Make sure your shoes are durable. Good luck!!

any clothes and shoes that fit. ideally waterproof/resistent shoes. dental floss. unlocked smart phone that takes a sim card. Patience and excitement.

Gosh...a whole year in one bag! Good luck with that one! lol at least if you forget anything you can always go and buy it in the shops!
