The correct sequence and timing of the stages should be as follows and my reasons.
1. Give students 5 mins to read the text. The time limit should be kept short to make sure that students skim the passage rather than read it word for word.
2. Ask them gist questions and then group the students in pairs to answer the questions. This will lessen the students' anxiety, and allowing them to have more practice time.
3. Asked them detailed questions and give them a longer time limit to answer the questions. This is a reading class, thus, giving students ample time to scan the text looking for specific details.
4. Elicit answers to the detailed questions and ask the students to check their answers in pairs or groups. This allows the students to have communication for them to practice on.
.
A teacher has written the following plan of activities for the during-reading part of the lesson based on this text :
1. Give students 15 mins to read the text.
2. Ask them gist questions in open class.
3. Ask them detailed questions and give them 5 mins to discuss the answers in pairs.
4. Elicit answers to the detailed questions.
Why is some of the sequencing and timing of stages not correct? Please correct this and give brief reasons for your corrections.
Refer to the stages of a listening and reading lesson in module 9 bearing in mind that this is a reading lesson and that your focus is the during-reading part of it. Write about 100 words.
