Chalkboard is i-to-i's TEFL community.
It is currently still in testing phase which could mean you find the odd bug!
Q: What is i-to-i Chalkboard? A: It's the online community of TEFL specialists i-to-i.com
Use the tabs below to learn more about our TEFL courses
I acquired my TEFL certificate via an i-to-i 40 hour course (together with 4 specialist certificates: One to One, Young Learners, Pronunciation, Limited Resources) at the end of 2009. I'm looking to work in central France. I love nature and continue to be intrigued by language. Both are wonderful things. I decided to do a TEFL course after helping some neighbours' children with their English pre-BAC/Brevet etc. I found it challenging, but enjoyable. The kids did OK too! I'm petrified of actually trying to do it for real in a paid environment, but I'm keen to get started too, on any level. All tips and advice will be gratefully received.

Any luck in finding a job yet? Let me know if I can help in any way. If you ever get the urge to move up to Nancy, I'm sure we could arrange some work for you ...

GML5 - I am teaching in Nancy in NE France, and don' t have a degree. Being a native speaker, together with business and training background was more than enough. I teach at a private language institute that targets professional people, as well as unemployed groups looking to improve their job prospects by learning / improving their english. Contact a few local language schools, and you might have some luck. Cheers, Neil.
Hi Yvette
Thank you for keeping in touch. My name is Renee DaCosta. I am from Panama, but i live in the Province of Colon. I have a Bachelors Degree in English Language.specialize in Educatiion and Post Graduate in Linguistics. My first experience as a teacher was in High School. I had tenth and eleventh grades. i was a little nervous for the first days, but then got familiarize with the students little by little. I had observed their behaviour, character, style. I was a little flexible with them,so i gain confidence, and that made the class easier for me. i am taeching for 15 years now. but every year for me is an experience. It is not that easy to teach English to students whos native tongue is spanish. I do a lot of activities in my class, to motivate my sudents. I am always looking for tips and ideas, so i use the internet a lot,but i create my own lessons and activities. I never take the Tefl Certification for teachers. It draws my attention very much, and i would like to take it someday, just for knowledge.
See you soon,
Hi,Yvette.Like you,I'm new to this! I've always liked France & visited many times so it was my first choice for where to teach when I did my TEFL course. But it would seem that, like most of Western Europe, schools require a Uni degree. So started looking at Eastern Europe (but too cold in Winter!) & SE Asia.If anyone can clarify if it's possible to get jobs in France without a degree,it'd be welcome. Thanks for info,i-to-i.I will check other discussions.
Hello,
Thanks for that I will definitely have a look. Yeah hopefully my degree will help me a bit, even though it isn't in English. Where are you teaching at the moment? have you been teaching long? I only started my course yesterday so it is all a bit scary at the moment!!
thanks again for that link, every thing helps,
Caroline
Hi Yvette,
Happy to have you aboard as a contact. With so much going on in the East and Middle East, I sometimes wonder if I'm here in France alone :) One of the disappointing things I found in France was that teaching in a government school requires a degree from a university. BUT, the upside is that there are a gazillion private schools and international schools one can apply to. Be prepared to furnish right to work papers, proof of an address, and lots of other papers.
So far, I have only taught in the "particulier" sense of being self-employed and teaching one on one, but that does not create the revenue necessary. I have found.
Are you in France now? Do you speak French fluently?
I love your picture...
Have a great day, and let's talk later.
Veronica
Hey Yvette,
Don't worry - Chalkboard's really easy to get your head around once you get started - you can write messages to people on their walls and also start discussions in the groups - you might like to start one in the 'Teachers in France' group: http://www.tefl-chalkboard.com/groups/35-Teachers-in-France
Good luck with your application - this article might come in handy: http://www.tefl-chalkboard.com/i-to-i/posts/269-5-simple-tips-for-tefl-job-success
Hello anyone and everyone,
I've just realised that I have absolutely no idea how to use one of these sites. I have friends and relatives back in Britain who use them, but I'm totally clueless. It seems that I need help with using what I imagine falls into the 'networking site' field, as well as starting up my TEFL career. Am I a lost cause already????
I've just seen a job offer for 20 hours English teaching at colleges in the Charente, France. This is exactly where and what I'm looking for. Never having put an application together for a teaching post, any advice would be welcome. Also, if anyone has particular knowledge of the French education system, recruitment process etc., I'd be most grateful. TTFN
