Would a college diploma help?

Hi all:

I would really appreciate some advice and or information.

Right now I'm in College and will partially finish a two year program in December.  I will have to return to night school to pick up 3 courses (so far) after I finish full time studies.

A bit about my background.  I worked for 10 years as an analyst for an IT consulting company but have never finished a college program.   Right now, my girlfriend lives in Japan and we are planning on me moving there and getting married.  I know that a BA is needed to get a work visa in Japan, but since I will be getting married when I get there, will the college diploma be beneficial in getting an English teaching position in Japan?

I'm asking because as it stands now, it will be at least another year before I can complete the diploma (a diploma that I will not be using).  So I'm thinking about quitting college and getting a full time job to save money to move to be with my girl.  I do plan on taking a TESOL course before I leave though, but I wanted to know if companies in Japan will frown on the fact that I didn't even finish college.  And will it be easier to get a position with the diploma?

Not going for the holiday visa, as I said, I'll be married, but just wanted to know my chances of getting hired since my Japanese is not that good, so the only real thing I can do there (for now) is teach English. I will be taking TESOL though, and I'm also a writer with one publication in an online mag. and one first place contest win under my belt so far. Hoping those will help as well in landing a job.

Yeah, but the problem is those without degrees will be on working holiday visas, with restrictions about hours (must be part time) and therefore pay, and so not jobs you want to be doing if you can avoid them. You cant get a working visa without a degree so any decent job they will assume you have one. You might drop on lucky yourself because of your unusual situation though.

Thanks Danny, very helpful info. Yes, the Mrs is Japanese. I've seen listings that ask for BAs and Others that haven't

By the way, I am assuming your Mrs is Japanese? If not you DEFINATELY need the degree.

You will obviously be able to get into the country on a spousal visa, and as far as I am aware they can employ you just the same as on a working visa if they want to, but most jobs require a degree and will automatically discount applicants without one as they have lots of applicants. It would be a huge help in terms of getting the job, but I suppose in your position you would still potentially be able to find work. In your situation I would get it done and out of the way, even if you have no plans to use it other than to get TEFL jobs.
