Webinars

Has anyone taken part in the 'webinars' and if so can you tell me what they are like.  They sound a bit scary - online TEFL is quite anonymous - this requires 'participation'.  Do they involve Skype?  Would I have to change out of my pyjamas? I've finished my course but the webinars are still available to me.  As I haven't started teaching yet perhaps it might be a good way for me to 'keep my hand in'.

Thx for that info, Craig, it helps to clarify the position for the Companys point of view. Perhaps to relieves strain on the  servers thay could send a gernic email to account holders briefly explaining the situation and asking them to nominate 1) maintain account access or 2) afer 48 hours be happy to allow it to lapse. THAT way people could clear their own resouces up and leave the space free for others within the system. Just a thought - For my part, I have kept scrupulous records of EVERYTHING as I intend to try and win 'advance standing' in a unit for my Masters in Education (TESOL) at my local university going into next semester. Only thing I didn't do was keep the website access list form th e Resources section(s) - will get to to that too.

Reagrds to all, Ian Bartle

Hello,

Yes, we do remove a number of courses after completion as it can cause a strain on our servers (amongst other things). However, we can open up your account for 48 hours at any time so that you can download resources or check your answers.

At the moment, the webinars are only posted on the main page so anyone with an account (expired or not) can still access them. However, we may change this in the future but it's something that's not been decided upon yet.

Hi Tina, About the webinars,  I did find my first one useful as it was a chance to revise a topic I'd done the reading for 2-3 days earlier.  The sense of having someone else out there who understood what I was doing and could make suggestions was also positive and inclusive as I've done ALL my learning in this field online and so in a fairly isolated way. I didnt realise quite how vital that sense of collegiality was until I actually received it thru the webinar cordinator and it then suddently hit me. I hope to do one on Pronunication tonight just to touch base with that issue again - I've got some lesson plans to do in my course so will use the webinar as a kick-along to get me started.

ALSO you say you can still access the webinars - Is that after your 90 day course expiry? Theore is a lot of chat on this site about people who lose access to stuff they wish they'd saved. I think some of the info from TEFL when you sign up can be a little misleading.  DO you also have to make your own copies of the Resources pages in order to save that info for after your Course Expiry as well?

This is a live issue for me - I've only got 5 days left!

Ciao Ian

Thanks Craig, I had a blind spot with the learning portal, forgetting the link was there! Missed the vocab one yesterday, hopefully catch it if you do it again. Have found all the others great and an added motivation and support in doing the assignments. Thanks

You can find the link when you login to the learning portal (above all the listed courses)

Yes, there is one in 56 minutes time (11am GMT)

The next webinar will be on Thursday and Friday. It's on how to teach pronunciation.

When is the next webinar? Is there one today?

Thanks for all the advice on webinars.  I shall have a go if there is one next week - in my pyjama's of course.

Hello,

My name is Craig and I'll be presenting the current webinars posted on the learning portal. Alannah and Katie have already covered most of the details. Thanks!

You're free to attend and leave whenever you want. There is a 30 minute slideshow presented by myself (with poll questions asked) followed by a Q&A session. They're based on our online course, but I also like to make it a bit more personal based on my experiences in the classroom.

Hope to see you there!

Webinar schwebinar :) It's just another fancy word for online learning presentation but we quite like it.

I've watched a fair few of Craig's webinars (he's the guy who does them from our Dublin office) and you can see his Chalkboard profile here http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-chalkboard/craigindublin Craig has taught in Japan for 4 years, so he knows his TEFL stuff.

In terms of participation, he might ask a few questions as he's running through the webinar to 'test' your learning, but you don't have to answer and it doesn't show up anywhere if you get it wrong. It would just be a multiple answer question and you click on the answer you think is correct. The results are displayed in a bar graph on screen and Craig will run through the answers etc.

They're a great learning tool and as Alannah said Craig can't see you, you can see him and hear him one way. You can 'raise your hand' virtually if you want to type a question and there is a session at the end to type any questions in and Craig will answer them.

Hope this helps!

Katie :)

No need to get out of your Pj's :) They talk, you listen and take notes. That's it basically! I found them very useful along with the course material and it's a great chance to ask some questions afterwards (you just type in any questions you have in a comment box) Also, if there is a particular topic that you wish to cover you could mention it and if there is enough interest in that topic it may be dealt with in another webinar, who knows!

Not yet. Was going to join yesterdays one but had to work late.

From what I've read - it's via microphone/headset and there's a half hour talk followed by Q&A.

Any extra education is always good so I'll be trying to take part in as many of these as I can.
