I have been working at my school now for nearly four years and recently it has become my resposibility to find new English teachers. Even though there are lots of people looking, its not an easy job finding the right person to fit in with our schools. Also you think you have found the right person and at the last minute they let you down.
For example, we were recommended by someone to an American couple. We only had one position available but as their resumes were good and they seemed to have the right personalities for our school, we though we would find a position for them both. Spent time interviewing them and chatting to them about life in Suzhou and how everything works. Had another chat and they said they were happy and they were going to come. Great, so I thought. Then a couple of days later I sent them an E-mail asking for some additional information and got the reply saying they had thought about it and decided now wasnt the right time for them to leave the states. It makes you feel like so much time was wasted and there were other applicants that were available but turned away and are now unavailable.
It is a big decision to move to another country and change your life. It is also a big decision for us or any other school to offer a position to someone and put faith in them that they are going to arrive.
When you apply for jobs and maybe accept them, make sure that its the right decision for you and its what you want. Its easy for you to say I am not coming now and get on with your life. But it causes allot of work for the schools that need to readvertise and try to find a new teacher in time for their deadline.
