Question on Checkpoint 5

Quick question... on checkpoint 5 there is a point where you have to lay out your lesson plan using the mock plan as a guide.  I already had some ideas in my head for mine, but in the mock plan some of the stages like "listening for gist" and "listening for detail" weren't in my ideas.. are these mandatory since they were in the mock plan?

p.s You only have to use listening and follow the stages 'listening for gist" and "listening for details" when the main aim of the lesson is listening for a skills based lesson.

Hello Spiwak,

No you don't have to - the listening in the example plan is used as part of the presentation stage to model the language (always a good technique when you have to teach set phrases instead of a particular grammar point).

Good luck!

I appreciate your comment.  I understand what they want for "listening for gist" and "listening for details" but my question is do I have to have a listening exercise to pass this checkpoint.  When I originally got ideas together in my head for this lesson plan, I did not input a listening exercise for the topic I chose.  And as I stated, I'm trying to figure out whether it is mandatory to include these parts since they were on the faus plan given to use as a guideline.

Hi there...I think it's important in a listening exercise to have the 'listening for gist' so your students try to understand the bigger picture and not just focus on the words. It gives you an idea on whether or not your students understand what the main idea is. After the bigger picture, 'listening for detail' means students are able to pick out smaller details that make up the main idea. Hope this helps and that I'm on the right track. good luck.
