Number 1 beer sculler in Shanghai!!!

5th

I travelled out to the very last stop on the train to meet up with Alex, Reese and some others. 1 hour later I arrived at a lovely lakeside apartment complex and park area. They were having a party to entice people to by an apartment in the newly constructed buildings in the middle of nowhere. We enjoyed lunch and sat down telling more stories of our experiences in China.  Then things got amazing.  A lady got on stage and invited people up on stage. Next thing we know they are sculling jugs of beer and winning prizes! I had to get in on that! I ran over to the side and one of the promoters grabbed me and asked to come back to my friends. She guaranteed us a place up there for as many people were willing. Only Kat, Alex and I were game enough. We took our places on stage, 1.25itres of Snow beer sitting in front of us. The lady said her spiel and then started the countdown.

3…2…1… We were off, Dan got it all on video! It was amazing! There were 2 other Chinese men up with us. The one on the far right finished about 30 second before me, but then ran as fast as he could and basically fell off the stage to throw up! All I was worried about was kicking the 2 American butts I had up there with me! I WON!!!!!!!!! I had a clear win over the yanks and the final Chinese man. And because the original winner had thrown up he was disqualified and I took the crown!!! Well the snow beer lighter and hot water flask!

Needless to say I kind of hung back from the drinking for a while and sat listening to more stories. We met some nice security guards and had broken chinglish talks with them. It’s amazing how much more you think you understand and are being understood after a few drinks…

After such a blinder yesterday and knowing it is still another few days till pay day I’ve decided to do the right thing and sit in the hostel working on my lesson plans! I had better get good or at least constructive feedback from this! Although I an upset with myself- Still so much to see but no energy to do it… I have to say Shanghai is a beautiful city, and I am having a ball here. It is different archit5ecture again (in Beijing I got sick of seeing the same blues reds and greens on the same shaped temples and pagodas) so this is a huge change to the art deco era and a few older streets, or the browns and greys or the temples here. However, it does nothing for me. The city doesn’t feel like China, or what I expect. I think Shanghai had a lot to live up to after 2 wonderful weeks in Beijing, and then Jinan and ZhZh.  I do love that I am seeing some of the old gang though! And wouldn’t change this for the world!!! No I lie… I would!!!! I’d bring my mates and family from Australia here (and make sure they drought real steak, tim tam’s and vegemite!!!!

I want to see that video! :) Sounds like you wiped the floor with 'em Sonya!

Ah tim tam's...someone in the Australian office donated a load to our office on a visit once and I did enjoy trying to drink my tea through it...very nice indeed. We've still got a jar of vegemite in the kitchen here from the same visit...it's not as popular as chocolate. Plus, we have MARMITE mate!

Take care,

Katie :)
