I have read that their academic year begins in January, does anyone know any more about this?

That's awesome you've decided to go to Ecuador! I'm not sure about the school year starting in January though - most of the contracts our partners have start in February, April and September: http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-jobs-abroad/tefl-ecuador.html. However, that's just one school - so you could find other schools who have contracts starting in January.
