Is there much Tefl work in Canada?

Hi,

Has anyone worked in Canada before or planning to? I'd like to work there but can't seem to find much information.

Thanks! :)

Hi Shenae,

I'm from Canada and currently live in Toronto- the most multicultural diverse city in the world. As English is one of our national languages we don't have a need for TEFL teachers. We do however have many ESL schools here but our teachers are usually CELTA certified. I have a few friends that have taught at ESL schools and it's a very difficult task. Firstly- the classrooms are mixed with many cultures so there are often cultural differences between students. Also the curriculum is more demanding because you're teaching adults, and are expected to have very developed lesson plans.

I would recommend teaching in Japan or Korea if you're interested in making some money and living in a Westernized country. I taught in Japan for a while and it was great.

Also- if you want to come to Canada to work you need to get a working visa- the qualifications for this depend on your nationality. You could come to Canada on working holiday and get a job- it would most likely be in a restaurant, in a retail store, etc...

Let me know if you have any more questions.
