Opening my e-mails first thing this morning, I saw an i-to-i e-mail waiting for me with the subject title of
Memoirs of a TEFL Teacher, Savings for You and TEFL-Tigers…Gr!
As am soon to be heading out to become a TEFL and drama teacher, plus all the excitement of Chinese New Year, I thought this would be a good read.
So, I clicked on the e-mail to open it, saw the usual pretty format of the i-to-i mail shots - started reading down the Memoirs part, I was thinking to myself, ah that's what Emma looks like, isn't it nice that I can finally put a face to the name especially when we have exchanged several messages on Chalkboard, and then BAM... there's my face underneath hers and a very flattering intro and link to my blogs!!! Furthermore, below my little bit is my hero Robert Clarke (who kindly introduce me to my first adventure in Spain!) and his photo and intro.
Am not sure if everyone is getting the same e-mail but if they are, I am so surprised / excited / honored / flattered to have my face in between the famous ones on Chalkboard and sent out to lord knows how many people on the i-to-i database. This is definitely motivating me to write more.
However, not much excitement is happening to my TEFL life lately. I am still ploughing through my online course (well, I've done all my reading, I just need to get to complete all the assignments as they are taking quite a while to be marked!) and waiting for my paperwork to come through for my Thai Visa. I am really looking forward to my first adventure out in Spain but also nervous about staying in a youth hostel (last time I manage to be in a 5 bed dorm with 4 snoring men!) and talking for 12 hours a day! I am also starting to think to myself how I am suppose to teach Drama as it is not really covered on the TEFL course!
So far, I am picturing myself playing video clips of my beloved Doctor Who (David Tennant, my hero) fighting the Daleks and then asking the kids to reenact the scene. Definitely check the exciting and fun boxes of a lesson, not culturally offensive (not that I am aware of anyway) and potentially challenging from a drama point of view (being aliens and all). Not too sure if the kids would know the show if I play them the theme tune though.

Sounds like a challenge - I shall most definitely do my best... Even I want to see a video clip with lots of Thai kids pretending to be Daleks and the Doctor now... Brilliant!!!
Hey Sandy,
Glad you were flattered about the mail! We really like your blogs and attitude to life in general so figured we'd share them with our email subscribers too!
Btw, please, please, please if you end up getting loads of Thai kids to reenact scenes from Doctor Who, make sure you video it - we need to see it! And who doesn't get excited by the Doctor Who theme tune....?
Without techology!
I can do Dalek impressions, really, I can!
Of course not! It's great! Will definitely do more once I am out there on placement. Never made video blogs before so will look forward to that and use you guys as guinea pigs!
Hope you didn't mind! We just really loved your blog and thought your job in Thailand was really unique. Good luck to you - can't wait to see how it all goes for you :)
