Hello world!
My name is Sandy and I am based in the UK. I am of Chinese origin but have been living in England for the past 18 years. I have lived in Newbury, Bath, Exeter, Bristol, London and now Nottingham. I have a BA in Business Economics and a MA in Human Resource Management. Majority of my professional life has been spent as a Graduate Recruiter for a global professional service firm based in London but have also worked for several global corporate clients. Am currently taking a career break and will be teaching English and Drama in Thailand from May onwards. Am towards the end of my 120 hours TEFL course and really really really looking forward to warmer weather! I am a keen hockey player and enjoy lots of other random but fun activities in my free time.

Log in to leave a comment or Create an accountHi Sandy, I'd love to teach English for a year or two, in China or South Korea....is it difficult to get jobs there? any advice? :) I see on the i-to-i website that you need to have graduated for two years before getting work in China :( it's only one year since I graduated from my bachelors degree (August 2009) but I'd really like to go there early in 2011
Hey Sandy :)
I know Bath! Its a lovely place. I am from Weston-super-Mare which is near Bristol. Its an alright place, but i still would rather be in China!
I think i read that you were going to do Pueblo Ingles. Did you do it yet? How was it?
I think the degree issue is a little worse than i first thought. It seems like more and more places are wanting you to have a degree before you can teach. Silly thing is, it doesn't matter what the degree is in. It could be in Basket Making! Crazy isn't it! Its not the law yet, but more and more schools want you to have one and it also makes it harder to obtain a foreign experts permit ( which is needed for the work visa) if you don't have one. Apparently it was like this in Japan and Korea a few years ago and now they are demanding degrees for visas. It seems like it may go that way here. :( I think they will lose a lot of good teachers if they do bring that law in!!
I know what you mean about the equal rights issue too. I am half Italian and one place said to me that i was too 'sun-tanned' for the position! Haha, oh well!
Anyway, keep in touch? Let me know how it is in Thailand! Maybe you could recommend me for a teaching position after i get my years experience!!
Take care! :) xx
Hi Sandy!!
Wooo Hong Kong!! I've always wanted to visit there.. And Thailand also. I can make a very good Thai green curry if I say so myself...lol but not as good as the Thailandese!
Yes I havn't finished either.. hehe but am getting on it! I'm teaching in an elementary school..so it's so much fun! The kids are so adorable.. Havn't used our lesson yet..but will do soon lol! I'm also volunteering in an orphanage, my heart goes out to them but they are learning so this really motivates me.. Also teaching dance four times a week so barely have time to finish my T.E.F.L course.. Right gonna get into shape and start studying now!!!!
Take care and enjoy your experience!!!

Hi Sandy~ I know it is hard to find a TEFL job having Chinese origins, but it is possible. The problem will be that people treat you like a local person, even if you pretend you can't speak Chinese (or actually can't even speak Chinese). For me, my Chinese can be fluent but I'm still respected as long as I don't use Chinese in the class (or don't get found using it *wink*). In Hong Kong there is no value with a bilingual setting from one teacher, you're a local teacher and you're cheap, or your a gweilo and you're ONLY speaking ENGLISH.
You could try educational centers though, just post your resume around, they should be more flexible (especially if your English if fluent). How are you when it comes to teaching grammar? This is my weaker point, so I try and keep to spoken English practice (or Kindergarten right now *yay*). I started in a small cheap educational center with fairly low pay, so don't worry if your first job isn't great, use it as a stepping stone. It would be better then getting a job as a T.A. Even a job as a T.A. would be an okay stepping stone, people would soon realize you're super over-qualified.
When are you coming back to N.T.? Where in this area are you from? I'm living in Fanling.
Hello! I have interviewed with Patai Udom Suksa school in N. Bangkok, Thailand. If I get the position, I will be starting in May as well. Fingers crossed....!!!
Hi Sandy!
You look and sound a very interesting person. I just logged on this morning and was trying to get in touch with this lady from Leicester where I live. I wanted to ask her a few questions about being a TEFL teacher. It looks like I have lost her her and found you instead. My name is Beng Brody from the Philippines. I would like to add you as my friend here if that's ok. I am also in Facebook. I am thinking of becoming an English teacher in a foreign land too because it looks real fun. You earn while you teach English and learn a lot in the process as well. I will write again as I am in a hurry to get a painting homework done for this afternoon. Keep doing well.
Warm regards,
Beng
Uhm, I don't know that place but if it's anything like where I went you will love it! I will look out for those during the new year and my girlfriend is Indonesian Chinese so I am sure I will get to taste them from her family! haha
Glad you took my advice about Pueblo, when do you go? Which venue did you choose? You are going to have a great time, I won't tell you too much about what happens as that spoils the magic but what I can say is you will meet some really cool people there and you will have loads of fun!
Hey Sandy
Thanks for adding me .
