Turned up at school this morning, not quite knowing what to expect. We had been told that we probably wouldn’t be teaching, but I’ve heard the stories of being thrown into class regardless, so was prepared for any scenario! As it happens, I had no reason to worry. We were shown around, given timetables and introduced to the Chinese English teachers of our year groups. I will be teaching grades 3 and 6 (8 and 10 years old), which is perfect! Also, as I am teaching different class groups it means only 2 lesson plans a week needed...marvellous, that’s all I can say!
The school itself is just unbelievable. It is the size of a small town, with basketball courts, football pitch, swimming pool, lake and just a sea of children wherever you look! As you walk through the school you get greeted with cries of ‘hello’ from pupils of all ages. The older ones have been keen to ask questions and help wherever possible. They are just gorgeous.
My first lessons are tomorrow afternoon, so have plenty of time to prepare in the morning – either at my desk in the office, or here in my apartment. The whole atmosphere has been quite relaxed, and we have been told that in primary all they want us to do is prepare fun games and activities for the children, as they are taught more formally by their other teachers. Brilliant!
At lunch we met one of the Spanish teachers, and she offered to show us around the nearby town. Later we met up with her and her friend and they pointed out the best places. So helpful! All the teachers have been great too, I think everyone we met gave their mobile number, and said to call if we needed help with anything – or to speak Chinese to someone if necessary! Useful to know...
We have also had a delivery of new pillows, lamps, a kettle, and iron and ironing board (no avoiding that unfortunately!) and a microwave should be on its way. We have also been told a cleaner will be coming in too, as our place is so dirty. Can’t really ask for much more! I have just been in a happy and excited bubble today, walking around smiling! I almost have to pinch myself to check I am actually physically here, and not in some bizarre dream world. But I am here. This is really happening!
Anyhow, it’s late. Have my powerpoint ready for my lessons tomorrow. Hope its goes well...feel a little bit nervous – but I am allowed to be! No matter how great everyone is, standing up in front of 40 children who don’t speak your language is daunting! Oh, but it will be fun though...new experiences are what this is all about, right?
Night all x
