A long overdue update about me. It's been over two years since I completed my TEFL and I have moved on from teaching ESL at TAFE to working as the training coordinator for a private RTO and also starting The Global Studio, a not for profit learning and workspace. In the past 18 months I have had the pleasure of teaching a diverse range of students from lots of different backgrounds; refugees and asylum seekers from Sudan and Iran, wives and partners of Japanese businessmen and immigrants from Russia, Bangladesh and the USA. The Global Studio has given the women a chance to be part of the local community while learning and improving their English language skills. We have raised funds to purchase much needed sewing and screen printing equipment and have started a couple of small social enterprises within The Studio. One student is now running a clothing repair and alteration service to supplement her income while she studies, another is just getting his upholstery business going, others are studying occupational health and safety and learning vocational construction skills. It has been hard work with many frustrating times trying to get enough funds to keep it all going but the most worthwhile job I have ever had. I still have plans to teach ESL in Thailand in the next few years but for the time being I will keep building The Global Studio. www.theglobalstudio.org.au

I admire the work you're doing, combining applicable sewing skills and English in the same classroom. It's a wonderful approach. I also hope to combine multiple disciplines in my own classroom some day.
I'm just now returning to school for a Master's in Education with an ESL focus. Can I ask what you're educational background is? I've been on the fence about whether I should pursue Education, Linguistics, Social Work or Women's Studies for some time. I want to be able to apply what I learn and work to improve the lives of women in our world. Our interests seem similar and I'd love to receive any feedback/ advice from you on how to begin a career teaching/empowering women. Hope to hear from you!
hey thankyou for your messge yes you are right about social work and teaching they go hand in hand!!! Im ok struggling a bit on the online course finding the time to complete it is really hard...
O wow Rob, you are such an inspiration....you go gett'em girl!
Well my bags are packed and I'm ready to go! Have one last day of teaching (Monday) and then two fab weeks in The Land of Smiles. It is so cold here today that it is hard to imagine being in short sleeves in just 48 hours, it will be a welcome change although every time I think the same thing I hit those revolving doors at Bangkok airport to be hit with that wave of heat and think "OMG! Have fun TEFLers, I will try to get on line while I am away. XX Robyn
Heading off to Thailand this coming Tuesday. This time for well deserved break. (even if I do say so myself. lol)
Teaching in Australia at the moment and loving it apart from the normal red tape and bulldust that comes with being a teacher and trying to run something that is out of the normal range of education.
It is great to see so many older teachers out there taking up the TEFL life. I haven't quite hit 50 yet but it is looming up very quickly. The big 5-0 will be in 2012 but happy to be part of this group. One day I will head overseas for a longer stay and teach but for now I am happy to come and go.
Cheers
hi Robyn, so encouraging to hear about your experiences. thanks for joining the MAT group! how's it going in Thailand? regards, Terry
Hi Robyn,
It went really well! Everyone was really happy with it despite missing the lovely sunshine outside. (And they didnit miss the grand final afterall!).
We're just finalising the details on our site and systems but we've got a date planned for December 4th. I'll let you know when it is available to book and send you all the links.
Speak soon
Hey,
Don't worry your post is in the right place and we've got it as an entry!
Good luck!!
Hey Robyn!
I work for i-to-i in the UK office. I have just seen your recent post about your ESL class, I noticed you had posted this twice as a group discussion and a journal entry. More people will see your journal entry, rather than the discussion so I have deleted one of these.
By the way I think what your doing in your classes is great and im looking forward to seeing pictures of your finished products!
Laura
