Good afternoon everyone, Last week a new teacher arrived! Not at our school but in our area, It’s someone some of you will know Teenickles, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Terri who has started working at AE World English in Gading Serpong.
On Friday night I took or rather my students took me out to the mall for class, The students had a great time and were more relaxed than when we are in class. We spent around 3hrs sat in Downtown which is the café area outside and we had a shisha, the flavors my students chose were Apple and Strawberry, Strawberry and Bubblegum and Double Apple. The last one was very interesting as instead of the shisha head they took an apple, hollowed it out and used that as the head! It gave the flavor a nice sweet texture and I recommend you try it if you ever have shisha! I also invited Terri along who my students really like and have told me to invite again when we go out. I have decided that on a Friday we will go out, maybe next week we will go to Karaoke, My students will probably have me singing some obscure Indonesian pop song I have never heard before! If they do I will have my revenge and get them to sing a Spice Girls song! (Apologies to any Spice Girls fans for my students potentially dreadful rendition).
Saturday was a chill out day for me and I just spent the day at home watching DVD’s which is partly because of the rain which is becoming more frequent now we are in the height of the rainy season!
Sunday Whitney, Terri and I went to Karawaci to shop for DVD’s and have lunch, On the way home we encountered a very strange guy, as we were sat in the angkot (small minivan bus) a guy sat opposite and when I looked at him he just started laughing for no reason which got me laughing. Whitney asked me what was the joke and I had no idea. He put his hand first on Whitney’s knee and she immediately told him to get off, a little while later and much weird talking he tried the same with me! I told him to STOP, he carried on talking and trying to talk to other people in the angkot, touching the guy next to him who was a body builder, he gave him a swift talking to probably along the lines of do that again and I will break you in half. So we get off and he starts to follow us, we walk in the opposite direction and luckily he just stopped and waited for an ojek (motorbike rider). It was all very strange; Whitney said she thought he looked like he was high.
Monday we had a new/old teacher arrive at the school, Ms Kate who comes originally from Poland, She has been working as a teacher for a long time and has also been teaching in China and for the past 2 years at another school in our group. She was here at Gading Serpong last year temporarily but has been transferred permanently, Welcome back Kate!
As she has arrived half-way through the intake it means we have lost some of our classes to her, no problem just means we have free periods or so I thought for me! I got to work on Monday as usual and she asked me how my class was as she was teaching them, News to me I didn’t know she had taken my class, So I told her and assumed I was teaching at 6pm instead. I left the school to go buy groceries for dinner and when I got back everyone was all over me, you have a class, you have a class, I told them Kate had them but it turned out it was an error and they had given her another class not mine that was the same level and she had taken my folder by mistake! I just ran to the class and played games for the remainder of the lesson.
On a more personal note, I have joined, kind of, the gym. Gold’s gym and a few others give out free 7/14 day trials so I have took them up on their kind offer and upon expiry I will go to a different gym and use their free trial. Thank you Gold’s and Celebrity Fitness!
I feel now would be the right time to inform you all of my descision to leave Indonesia at the end of my contract in March, I have had a wonderful time but I need a change of scenery and have therefore taken a job offer in China. The city I will be working in from April is Dongguan, around 1hr by boat from Hong Kong. I am due to start the position at the beginning of April. Please do not let this stop anyone, now or when I am there, from asking for my advice about teaching in Indonesia.

Haha I miss shisha! I've never tried a double apple one before though! Sounds interesting!
I will capture some footage for sure! We actually did a practice run tonite in class, You can find karaoke versions of songs on youtube, complete with lyrics! My students are actually quite good, but then again they are Asian and karaoke is a national sport for them! haha
That guy on the bus sounds super-weird...
Great post though - enjoy the karaoke - reckon we definitely need to see video evidence of the Spice Girls revenge plot!
