The title says it all, Since arriving in China just over 4 months ago I haven't had much time to write on the chalkboard site. But now things are changing, I am leaving my job at EF and moving to work for a kindergarten in the same city, the hours are better and the pay is more which folks gives me more time to start blogging on a regular basis again.
So starting from 1st September I will officially work for CIEO kindergarten, it's a Canadian International school that has quite a few schools in the Guangdong province of China. The hours are perfect, Monday to Friday with weekends off and two further afternoons off in the week. The pay is 2000 yuan (£200) more than my current salary and here's the best bit, I teach the kids for 1hr per day, just in case you think you see a typo let me do it again, ONE hour per day! The rest of the time in the morning is staying with the kids doing playtime and art etc then in the afternoon I just have to do preparation and paper work!
So how did I land this dream position? I put an ad the the HERE Dongguan magazine for my fiance advertising private classes for kids, a couple of days into publication and I get a call (I used my number as she hadn't arrived in China yet) asking if I want a full-time job, I explained the situation and offered to call him if I knew anyone who would be interested. After having it in the back of my head for a couple of weeks I decided to give him a call to see what the salary and hours were, he invited my in for an interview where low and behold I know the guy from one of the bar's that I go to, he also recognised me immediately. I had a tour of the school and watched a class then he offered me the job, starting in the new semester in September.
I would also like to say to anyone interested in working in China in a kindergarten please let me know as there are further vacancies with this company.
I will try to start posting again regularly as much as I can, and from September I will have more time on my hands.
If anyone has any questions then please do let me know, I am always happy to answer them!

WOW that sounds like my dream job! Very exciting to hear that there are positions like that!
Hi Robert, Could you give me your email? I want to ask you several questions about your school and the organization you are with... My placement in China is extremely diifficult such that my roommate (i.e. the other intern placed here at the same school) and I are constantly vascilating as to whether to stay or leave! I've gone so far as to give my notice, but feel sad about giving up on China so soon, so am curious about other options and still undecided....
Ah, sorry I just read what you posted below about business visa's.
Sounds good Robert. I take it they do not mind a non-degree holder?
Hey Robert,
That all sounds great, I am really interested. Could you send me on an email address and I could forward you on my CV, I've loads of experience working with children both in Ireland and abroad and am still looking for work in China in September. Please forward as much information as possible on salary, acommodation provided and working Visa. My email address is elaine_mcgarvey@yahoo.ie.
Hope to speak soon
Elaine
Great, Robert! Thanks - on both counts. :-)
Ok, that's fine. Just let me know when you want work and I will see what we have available at the time.
CD's and DVD's: There are copious amounts of them here by even the most obscure western artists so don't worry. Not sure about Beijing but here I pay about £0.60 per disk.
Originally my plan was to look for more work after the internship, but I've become more cautious and have decided not to give up my apartment here in Canada. I think I will play it by ear and see how I do on the internship.
At the moment my CV doesn't have any teaching experience per se, as all of my teaching has been in unofficial capacities (see the About Me on my profile), so it wouldn't do any good sending it to you yet. I do appreciate the offer, and will definitely send it to you once I know if I will be staying on or returning home in January.
I have a totally unrelated and really dumb question, though: as far as buying cd's in China goes, is there available lots of Western artists (I'm thinking of Michael Jackson, Chris de Burgh, Nickleback, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, etc)?
It's per month, my total salary will be 8000 Yuan per month, which is 2000 more than my current job at EF. It does limit you in some cases but if the school likes you or thinks you have potential then they will help you get around it.
Legally you should have a work visa but most expats who work here are on business visas, I am currently on a work visa but I might have to change that to business as the school I am going to cannot get a work visa for non-degree holders.
I have spoken to Chinese lawyers about this and they have assured me it is ok.
Are you interested in working in China after the internship? please send me your CV so I can try and get you a school for when you have finished
Hi Robert,
Is that 2000 Yuan a month or a week?
I noticed somewhere that you don't have a university degree. Neither do I, and that has been my concern. How much does it limit the jobs one can apply for?
I am coming for the August internship, arriving in Beijing on the 19th. Getting excited - and NERVOUS! ;-)
Sounds appealing. I'm going to check out their website and contact you by email.
Hey Robert,
Congratulations on the new job! Looking forward to hearing all about it!
Hey,
Welcome back and good to hear from you - your new job sounds really sweet - look forward to hearing how it goes!
Hi Robert, that sounds like a great deal you have managed to get yourself there! Im actually planning on moving to Shanghai next year, and was wondering how you find living over there? And how have you found teaching English over there?
You can send me your CV and contact details to rwclarke@live.co.uk : I will pass them on to the foreign teacher manager and he will arrange a telephone interview with you.
Hi there - How do you go about applying for a job at the school you will be working for?
