Taking the plunge, applying in China!

Well, my boyfriend and i have finally taken the plunge and started applying fof TEFL jobs in China. Mainly ones i have found on Daves cafe and other websites like that.

Things were a bit rocky to start with. We didn't know who to do a TEFL with, or even to do one at all for that matter. What we finally decided was to apply for jobs and get over to China asap. Once there to take a TEFL course, either online or whatever, but the issue with classroom experience won't matter as we'll be getting that! I think we needed to get experience asap as visa laws change almost monthly and there are already so many places that we can't teach legally without a degree.

My boyfriend and i have been applying for jobs as teaching assistants and oral english coaches. The school websites so far have been divided on us coming as a couple. Some like it and there are actually jobs advertised for couples and some are not so keen. We have both decided that as long as we get accomodation together, different schools don't matter so much. :)

We should be getting interviews in the next few weeks (i hope) so i need to make a list of what to ask. My mind always goes blank in interviews! I've been advised to confirm things like hours, class sizes, accomodation, etc whilst on the phone as its harder to request things once there apparently.

So all being well we're hoping to be in China around May and i can't wait!

Good luck Rin I hope you find something good

Most schools in China will give you an allowance if you choose not to live in the teachers house, so Don't worry if you have to find somewhere on your own, the school or schools will probably help with finding and negotiating a deal for you! Depending on where you teach you can find accommodation that is quite nice for around 1500RMB anything much less than that will likely be small and not so well kept but there are deals out there! As a guide the EF I will be teaching at offer an allowance of 1200RMB in the first year for non-teacher house accommodation and 1800RMB in the second year. If you both have an allowance like that you will be laughing! Good luck with the applications - I don't have a degree either so maybe try emailing Robyn at Start Consulting chinateachonline@yahoo.com.cn - Keep us updated!
