Rocking around the Christmas Tree....

Firstly I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas...Secondly I have some bad news, you have been refused from your school...I have got to say this wasn’t really the Christmas present I was looking for but due to a set of unfortunate circumstances I have found myself out of a job in Chanthaburi...having spent the last 3 weeks on crutches and expecting to go back on Monday this was not going the way I...

120hr online course vs 140hr combined course?

Since i have no previous teaching experience and want as good a foundation as possible before starting on my teaching career i have been looking at tefl courses and have settled on either the 120hr online course or the 140hr combined course. The most obvious difference for me is the 300euro price difference between the two.The 120hr is 470euro and the 140hr combined is 770euro.Bloody expensive if you ask me but necessary if i want...

Job Idea

I have been emailed about a teaching job in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. They need teachers starting in May next year. Maybe too soon for me. I will need to think about it.

Technology

I remember my first computer not being very exciting. It was a Commodore PC that used the large floppy disc and later brought out and adaptor so we could use the smaller floppy discs - it had a few games, one being a santa knock-off of mario - it also had an infrared remote control that was crap. I also remember the BBC computers at school, with the green writing and pressing 'Y' for yes or...

Advice for older teacher?

Thinking of becoming certified for the next chapter of my life.  I'm 52 yrs old now.  Just wondering if there are others my age out there that made the plunge and what advice they have for me.  Are there opportunities to teach ESL in the states or only opportunities to teach abroad?  What is the best place for someone my age to focus on for a first teaching experience?  Advice anyone?

secret friend

In the week before Christmas, most of my classes have been playing secret friend.  The version they play here is different to what we did in Spain at Pueblo Ingles.  There, we gave our secret friend a few small but cheap or free presents during the week, usually by getting someone else to deliver it.  Or we do them some small favours incognito, then we revealed our identities on the last day.  Here they buy...

Future Destinations

The world is my oyster! I hope. With a South African passport I'm afraid it manifestly IS NOT! But I am an optimist! I have only ever been to London (abroad). It was great although I must say that I met too many one-dimensional robots there. English folks are often rather dreary and unfriendly; but it is cosmopolitan and so I met other europeans: I loved the Italians, Spanish and Turks especially. I suppose Italy...

"I like..."

A few days ago, I asked my students "What animal do you like?"  I got the typical responses of, "I like rabbits", "I like cats", "I like dogs" (but keep in mind, Thais have a difficult time saying the "s" at the end, so it was really, "I like rabbit", ect.). But then I got some really unique answers that I just didn't expect! One kid said, "I like jellyfish!", another said, "I like starfish!"...

News

My year has ended superbly well.  2 weeks ago I was talking with the owner of an English Language school in Brisbane, and when he heard I had completed my TEFL 140, he offered me a job. Of course I jumped at the opportunity. However, I had read on the TEFL site, when I first started my course, that to legally teach in Australia one must have a degree and the minimum of CELTA. I...
