How much does it cost to start a course before we can teach?

Hi everyone, I am interested in teaching in Thailand, but when i read about the information on this website, http://www.teachabroadthailand.com/tefl-chiang-mai.html, it seems like it costs a fortune to get a TEFL certificate, around 3988pounds, USD$6380. It's really really expensive. This is a "hands-on" kind of course, where we get to go to Thailand to "feel" the culture before we get the certificate. I just want to know, for those who are already teaching elsewhere, can you...

Open return flight.

While planning what would be involved in doing tefl in China i got some great advice from several people on here. Most people reccommended that i book what is called an open ended return flight to whever in China i would be going. I have tried a few websites and none ofthem seem to provide the option of booking an open ended return flight to anywhere. For those of you that have done this could...

new year in Quito

I went to Quito for new year.. some of it was really good fun and some was surprisingly quiet.  The main streets were full of stages and music and rammed with people, but only til about 8 oclock and then everyone goes home to be with their family, or to church.  Then at midnight they´re all out again making a bonfire in the street.  They get these maniquins called manigotes, dress them up like politicians...

New Year wishes

Okay...so it's been a long time since I updated this...I swear I'm getting worse. There was halloween with the kids; that was great. We (the foreign teachers) were paid to make a haunted house. Where I work we have a small jungle gym that we created into a maze with some spots for various horrors (I was a jack-in-a-box with the face of the Joker). Then we got told we had to make the Kids cry. Trust...

Thunder and Lightning

So i've been in japan now since april and only experienced one other Thunder storm apart from the one last night. Normally in the UK we'd experience them in summer due to the warm heat - and being in a country where it gets humid i would have thought there would have been more - one thing i didnt expect is to have a thunder storm in the middle of winter... I've heard of rain...

Christmas and The End

The countdown is on until my last class… no, hang on just a minute - the countdown is over! I got a text Wednesday morning, just as I was snoozing the alarm (again), to say that class is over and not to come in, so I finished my stint as a TEFL teacher two days early! I’d said goodbye to everyone at Kindergarten 1 on Tuesday, so at least I got one set of goodbyes...

China Fund

I have decided that i am doing the 120hr online course as soon as i can afford it in 2011.My aim is to be in China teaching by end of 2011 or sooner if possible.Being realistic it will probably be last quarter 2011 or first quarter 2012 by the time all is sorted. The 120hr online course was decided on largely for financial reasons as much as anything else.Although you can probably negotiate a reimbursment...

subtropical snow!

Now, I'm not being funny but coming to a "subtropical" island I wasn't exactly expecting snow blizzards! Huh?!! I'm not really disappointed, because I know it'll be amazing in the spring/summer, I'm just surprised! And Wikipedia's backing me up - it says  "In subtropical climates the winters are relatively warm, but not as hot as the summer season. These climates rarely—if ever—see frost or snow..." - oh really?! Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia boys and girls!...
