Comments - Any advice on teaching in South Korea?

My current job I found through putting my CV online and being contacted by the school. I think it was with Dave's ESL cafe. However, you need all your documents ready to go for that. But yes, I did like www.teachkoreans.com, one guy from Manchester and his Korean wife. They're on chalkboard. The recruiter, however, matters a lot less than the school. I didn't see mine after the first week (I didn't need to, I'm sure that if I'd wanted to I could have).

Aww that does sound like a prediciment. I wasnt that bothered where I got placed, I just didnt fancy Seoul so I didnt opt for that. I went through Footprints Recruiting for EPIK and although I havent had my contract confirmend or anything, I'm pretty sure that I've got a job.

There is still options for you though. Research the TALK program, I think you're placed somewhere pretty rural and work 15 hours per week and there are other programs too. I think the not-living together is more of a cultural thing that EPIK has responded to. You may need to go prviate (Hagwon) if you're wanting to dictate exactly where you go. Is there any reason you want public schools? Mahalath, below, is working in a private Hagwon in Daejeon at the moment and loves it. I think she went through TeachKoreans.com and recommends them. x

PS - Checkpoint 5 is getting on my wick!!

I was initially going to apply through epik however I don't like how they don't tell you where you will be placed until you get there. Also my boyfriend is considering teaching in Korea, we know we cannot apply as a couple and live together because we are not married. We don't mind not living together and not teaching at the same school, but we would like to be in a reasonable proximity to each other. No more than a 30 minute walk. So if anyone can recommend a recruiter that would consider applicants that want to be placed close, please let me know. Thank you for advice and suggestions below! Adfletch83, have you applied and secured a job? If so who have you gone through? It's driving me mad trying to decide on a 'reputable' recruiter x

I used a recruiter but I think applications from recruiters ceased and EPIK were only taking direct applicants. I believe that that, too, has now finished?!

How did you get on? x

Apparently you get very little say in where you go this year. You just get to say "rural" or "urban", so you never know!

I would suggest going through a recruiter, they're free and a good one will answer any questions that you have. I used Korean Horizons, and I have only nice things to say about them. You should still be able to get a position with a start day of August, but the big cities (like Seoul and Busan) may be filled by now.

Hey! I'd apply for your CRB tomorrow as that's the longest thing to get done. They should fill you in on all the other stuff you need, but basically it's that and a copy of your degree both with apostilles, then a medical form and I think that's it. Whichever recruiter you go through should be able to tell you about the rest. Most important thing is to get a CRB done. It's just a basic Disclosure Scotland that you need and I think it takes three to four weeks (then you need to send it off for an apostille, so about another week). If you do get a position, it will be starting in the middle of August.

thankyou, I'll have a look at their website x

Hi, I would recommend esl starter I am going through it with them and they are so lovely and helpful, as far as I know this is a good time, apply through them and they will get back to you asap as they are based in England x
