hey I have answered this question could you let me know if i have the right idea or  anyones advice please

Aiming this for an adult class as it can contain strong use of violence and words, I would introduce the film 'Harry Brown' this would let them see the topic of 'society' and how it is in certain places in England today , let them know the specific part of England 'South London'where the film was based in by using a map of england and pointing to the whereabouts . Discuss as an whole class or in groups the violence, how people make money, weapons and the kind of estates old/young people live in. Then I could talk about the growth of violence yearly in english speaking countries.

Hey Gerard,

I think you're Irish right? Why don't you do something around the tradition of St Patrick's Day?

are you from an english speaking country such as america or the UK...if so then this should be very straight forward.

Think of how you would tell anyone about your country in an interesting way...the first thing that comes to mind is pictures...they are so useful...they can be of family, your town, the capital...if you are from england then pics of the Red Buses, the queen etc...think how you would use them

There is also maps.

flags...again if your from the UK you can use flags to teach about the different countries that make the UK.

Currency.

My first ever class at a new school is always an introduction class which explains where i am from...i do a quiz with questions like "where am i from?" Which picture is my house, how many people are in my family, how did i get to work, what is my national food...i dont expect them to know but its a fun way because kids are always competitive...of course when i reveal the answers i use photos and pictures (laminate them to make them last longer)...but by using the pictures they can see what it is like in my country...i use the english flag to say which country i am from...its a hugh flag and i get the students to hold it up, the same with the map...students like to help.

the good thing with Englands currency is you can first ask what is the capital, then have some pictures of a taxi, red bus, post box and then of buckingham palace and ask who lives here...then explain about the queen...then ask if they know which famous person is on our money...hand some money out - it can be 1ps and 2ps...ive used notes as well...that way they can to touch stuff whilst learning...

hopefully this will spark some ideas
