Hi there :)
As soon as I wrote this I immediately thought 'he has a Thai wife' I didn't know about your little boy :) bless <3 How does dual nationality work? Does he get the best of both worlds? Yea, I was thinking that it'd totally favour that you have a Thai wife. That'll help you teach and live in Thailand for sure.
Good luck! :)
PS. I know what you mean about the smiling to ‘save face’. I have been a the scene of a traffic accident when an ambulance has been needed to take a small child to hospital and seen Thai’s standing around smiling.
Even though Thais have a rich culture dating back thousands of years which is the envy of the rest of the world, it is often difficult for non-thais to rationalise their sometimes idiosyncratic behaviour. Thai people will also sometimes lie to avoid an unpleasant situation or to avoid 'losing face'. Telling the truth is desirable in Thailand, but it is just not as important as protecting the face of those for whom Thais feel respect. What may seem strange oddball, confusing or illogical to foreigners has a simple explanation: You’re in Thailand. Enjoy! :)
Sorry, that ended up being a longer PS then I thought.
Thanks to you both, Sany and Rin, for your speedy response.
That job opportunity sounds tempting, Sandy, but alas I’m not ready to leave good old Blighty just yet. And besides, I haven’t taken my CELTA / TEFL course yet. I have however taken a mini taster course and I’m currently doing a bit of voluntary teaching here in the UK to foreign learners and thoroughly enjoying it.
Rim, you could be right about the visa thing, but the way I see it Thailand is constantly moving the goal posts where ‘farangs’ are concerned, so I guess I’ll wait until a bit nearer the time (when I’m ready to go) to get the latest information. And there’s another factor to take into consideration, as my wife is Thai and my little boy half Thai (with duel nationality), I may be in a strong position to get a long term (I year) visa. Time will tell.
Thanks once again for the feedback.
Pat.
Hi, Just to let you know. You need a degree to teach legally in Thailand. (get a work visa and residence permit) Though they may accept a celta. Not sure. This is a government rule, not a school rule.
Hey Pat!
Am not sure about minimum requirements as different school have different systems. However, I would have imagine once you have your CELTA all will be good as that is the second most important thing after you being a Westerner! In fact, my school is currently recruiting for 4 teachers pretty much with asap start. If you are interested let me know and will put you through to my head teacher!
Good luck with the rest of your CELTA.
Hi Sandy, I'm new to this site and just read your post. It all sounds very interesting and something I'd really like to have a go at one day. My wife is Thai and although we are currently living in the UK, we are hoping (once I have my CELTA certificate) to teach over there.
Do you need a degree also to teach over in Thailand, I've heard some schools make it a requirement and others don't. I have a Foundation Degree (3 year part-time study) and wondered, do you think this would be accepted along with the CELTA certificate to get a post within a decent school in Bangkok?.
Thanks, bbwn (Pat)
Oooh sounds great!! :)
The thing with emotions are a weakness is the same in China, i believe. I can imagine them saying 'you are a very rubbish teacher, you must improve' and be laughing and smiling as they say it.., haha..
How long are you in Thailand for? I'm hoping to come visit Thailand sometime during my stay in China. Maybe when I do the HK visa run in August.
Clothes are apparently tiny in China too. Are there no bigger people at all??
Thanks for the Tampon tip! I read that toothpaste and antiperspirant were hard to get hold of in China. So I have been stocking up!
14 days til I fly out!! Woohoo!
Loving the double fan action! I think i would definately be doing the same!
Sound's like you're having a great time out there Sandy!
Looking forward to your next blog!
