Should I wait afew years before taking a TEFL course?

Hi,

I have been learning italian for approximately 5 months, which has sparked my desire to travel. I am interested in taking a TEFL course, but worry that I may be too young to find a job, especially in Italy and Europe, where I hear there is much compitition for work.  I will be 19 in May, and I am currently studing Science in college.  It is my understanding that a Degree is a requirement for many teaching jobs is Europe.  Though I am an E.U member which should make obtaining a work visa easier.

I am looking for advice as to whether I should wait to finish my degree before taking a TEFL course and searching for teaching work abroad.  I do not plan on taking a gap year, though my summer holidays are 4 months which I hope to be sufficient time to obtain some work abroad.  Any advice is much appreciated,

Thanks :)

Hey! I know that when I took my course (a Cert TESOL, not i-to-i), I was told that they tend to not accept people under 21 because of the level of study that is required. I'm pretty sure that i-to-i are happy to accept you any time, and it's not quite the same as a classroom course, but still, worth thinking about maybe.

Having said that though, if you have the time, motivation and the money now, why wait? Your course won't expire, and you will be able to go straight after you graduate.

Summer work is fun, and doesn't always require a TEFL certificate. I actually got my feet wet with summer work before I invested in the certificate. I do teach better with it, but also having a little experience helped me with my TEFL.

I don't really have a definite answer, but I thought I'd offer some things to think about :)
