NiamhFrusciante’s Blog

And so it begins =)

Hello,

My name is Niamh and I live in Ireland. I have just booked my 120hour TEFL course. Two of my friends and I are looking to escape life in Ireland for something a tad more exciting! We are all college graduates and are a little uncertain about the future, and TEFL seems to provide the answer! I'm just going to try and document the first stages to see if we can help anyone, or if anyone had advice for us. I know I have a million questions! But so far the help I've been receiving from an i-to-i consultant has been great. Anyhoo! We plan on going to the Czech Republic at the end of September (basically because that's when we'll have enough money!) This worries me because so many job offers I've seen seem to begin end of Aug/beginning of Sept. And all seem to be long term, we only want to work until next summer so we can return home to do Masters. If anyone has advice for getting jobs from end of September on please let me know.

That's it for now I suppose =)

HI NIAMH, I SEE UR FROM THE BANNER COUNTY, HA HA. IM HEADING OVER TO CZECH TO HOPEFULLY ALL GOING WELL, DID U DO UR TELF COURSE YET? AND WHEN ARE U DECIDING TO HEAD OVER, IM DOING MY COURSE IN GALWAY. HOPE TO HEAR FROM YA, TAKE CARE

We applied for the Job Placement Service and it appears it us unlikely that they'll find us work for September. We'd have to wait until next February! Hopefully we can find work on our own.

I'd definitely say start applying.  Add on you CV that you'll be done with your TEFL in whatever month your 90 days is up.  I'd suggest finishing as quickly as possible though because they might want copies of things before your arrival.

As for James Cook, there is someone else here on the forum that is working for them.  I know they've been mentioned.  I'd search through some Czech posts and see if you can find the person.  Sorry I can't remember who.  Honor might be able to tell you.

Thanks so much for the advice. Yeah I've been saving a good bit. That's why we won't be leaving till end of September. We realise it could be while before things start happening so we want to have enough money to be comfortable for a little bit. So you recommend to apply for work now? Even though i haven't completed the course? I heard about James Cook Language Schools, know anything about them? They seem to hire all year round.

I agree scout out Schools directly but bare in mind you are going to have to save a bit of cash to get you through potentially a few weeks where you are job hunting and its not going to be cheap even if you scrimp and save!Have a look at seasonalworkers.com as there are one or two links to jobs in the Czech Repub on there.Private Schools might be your best bet for teaching out of season as it were as would private tutoring. You should be able to find something pretty soon even if competition is high as long as you put the leg work in.Good luck!

Czech can be an interesting country when it comes to hiring for TEFL teachers...  You're an EU citizen so you've got it easy. You have a uni degree which is also a plus.  You shouldn't have any problems.  However, I've read on many sites that because so many go to Czech for TEFL jobs that it's a high competition.  I'd definitely scout out some schools and contact them first maybe.  Let them know you'll be in town at whatever dates and that you'd like to talk to them.  See what happens.  If you don't contact them, at least have a list of schools written down that you want visit and talk to.  This will help speed up the process and eliminate the junk you might run into for schools there.  Slavic countries are weird at times hiring English natives... just make sure you do a bit of study on customs and such.  I'm in Serbia and headed to Ukraine in 2 weeks (unless things fall through) and you shouldn't have a problem, honestly.

Good luck!!  Keep us up to date about it all!!

@Spiwak432 Thanks for the comment. I'm from Clare, on the West coast. My friends and I will be moving over the 1st of October, at the latest hopefully, as that's when we will be able to afford to go over. Do you know if we can find work then?

Congrats and good luck.  Most jobs require just a year.. which would get you back home by next summer.  Most hire for the school year - Aug/Sept to June-ish.

Where in Ireland are you?
