Youngsters moving abroad should sort out finances before departing

Posted 01 Sep 2010

Youngsters, who are taking a gap year, possibly to teach English abroad, should work out how to fund their trip before they go.

That is according to moneysupermarket.com, which also claims that a gap year is an ideal opportunity to see the world before being tied down – either to university or full-time employment.

This could be especially poignant advice for those who are planning to teach English abroad after failing to get into university following a year of record A-level results and increased applications to higher education institutions.

Kevin Mountford, head of banking at the comparison firm, said: "Taking time to sort their travel money out as early as possible could make all the difference – no one wants to have to cut their trip short, or worse get stranded with no money, just because they didn't plan properly."

One suggestion is a pre-paid card which can be used abroad and helpful parents may like to put money onto it.

It can aid budgeting as the traveller cannot spend more than what is on the card but some firms charge a monthly fee which consumers should try and avoid.
