Vocational training set to increase as youngsters avoid high tuition fees

Posted 29 Nov 2010

Apprenticeships and vocational training, which may include an internship allowing people to teach English abroad, look set to increase from next year.

That is according to Craig Abrahart, operating director at notgoingtouni.co.uk, which was established to help young people make informed decisions about alternatives to university.

He said: "One of the concerns was that we had 150,000 young people who couldn't get into university this year – those people are probably going to end up applying to university next year to beat the tuition fees rise.

"So next year, already, there is going to be even bigger demand for vocational training in either apprenticeships, foundation degrees or other vocational modes like HNDs [higher national diplomas]."

One way in which a young person can gain a qualification while working is by teaching English abroad as part of an internship as the person can complete a TEFL course and earn money at the same time.

Mr Abrahart made these comments after McDonald's revealed on November 25th that it will be offering a foundation degree in Managing Business Operations.
