Vocational training is a ‘great alternative to university’

Posted 16 Feb 2011

There are plenty of alternatives to university, such as an apprenticeship or internship teaching English abroad, which could be undertaken.

However, many young people miss out on these opportunities as their career guidance is lacking.

Such is the opinion of Sarah Clover, sales and marketing director at notgoingtouni.co.uk, who also stated that even those who go to university may be faced with unemployment.

She said: "Apprenticeships and other kinds of vocational training really are great alternatives to university, because you get paid while you are learning, there is a good chance you'll get a job at the end of it and you haven't got any debt – what's not to like?"

Ms Clover made these comments after a survey from Totaljobs.com found that 38 per cent of the graduates questioned had claimed jobseeker's allowance since leaving university.

Those who have been to university but are now unemployed may find it hard to get the funding for an apprenticeship so an internship teaching English abroad could be a better option.

People on this internship can work towards earning a TEFL certificate while earning money and living in a country such as Thailand.
