Vacancies for TEFL teachers increases threefold in a decade

Posted 30 Nov 2010

Those with a TEFL certificate have plenty of opportunity to find a job abroad as language schools have increased in popularity.

Over the last decade, the number of vacancies for those who wish to teach English abroad has trebled, reports the Guardian.

It is thought that international schools across the world provide 265,000 English teaching vacancies with the majority of these being in Asia, with 134,045 teachers.

The majority of these teachers are from the UK, US, Australia or Canada and they tend to find jobs through recruitment fairs, online or through a TEFL specialist.

As international schools are still expanding across the world, there may be a shortage of English teachers, suggesting those with a TEFL certificate will have plenty of choice.

Andrew Wigford, from the recruitment agency Teachers International Consultancy, told the news provider: "Because international teachers tend to be younger and more proactive, opportunities for promotion come up much more often."

One company that is set to expand its language schools overseas is Pearson, which plans to build another 50 schools in China within five years.
