The economic downturn should be prompting more people to improve employability by developing their skills, an expert has warned.
Dr John McGurk, an advisor for learning and talent development at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said there is an enormous range of ways in which people can upskill.
In news that may interest prospective TEFL teachers, he said development need not be restricted to simply enrolling on courses.
Instead, he advised "taking on new tasks so that you stretch yourself and build your skill levels".
While this could include private study, Dr McGurk also suggested "developing more broad competencies like emotional intelligence or your project management skills or something of that nature".
Meanwhile, TEFL jobs abroad have been listed in a new government pamphlet advising students of the best ways to make the most of their options in the recession.
The brochure, which will be sent to all UK university and college-goers who graduate this year, will also include information on volunteering overseas and applying for internships.
