American students eyeing a career teaching English as a foreign language may be interested in efforts by a California university to give training more weight.
The University of San Francisco and UC Santa Cruz Extension in Silicon Valley are encouraging students to upgrade the TEFL qualification they obtained from the establishment – a Certificate Program in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) – to a Master of Arts degree.
Launching later this year, the scheme is open to students who have earned a UCSC TESL Certificate in the last five years.
They will be required to attend lessons at USFs South Bay Regional Campus one evening per week.
In total, the Masters degree should take just one calendar year and will cover a 16-unit curriculum.
In other US TEFL news, Florida Atlantic University will this week decide whether to press ahead with plans to set up its own degree programme aimed at helping TEFL teachers learn vital skills for their role, the Palm Beach Post reports.
