Ucas figures suggest most university places now full

Posted 28 Aug 2009

Reports estimate some 100,000 students could miss out on university places this year as universities rapidly run out of space.

According to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas), there are still 135,800 students in clearing and a further 50,778 waiting to see whether their chosen universities will accept them despite missing the grades when A level results were published last Thursday (August 20th).

The organisation claims on that day alone it received more than 1.2 million clearing vacancy searches by midnight – almost double last year’s figure.

Anthony McClaran, chief executive of Ucas, said: "As predicted, this year has been exceptional in many ways.

"Confirmation and clearing activity was always going to be challenging, but, as predicted, it has been quick and competitive so far – 22,599 clearing acceptances already processed, an increase of 13,336 when compared to the same point last year."

Teenagers who fail to secure a university place could consider taking a gap year abroad to teach English.

Meaningful travel company i-to-i is offering a teaching internship in China where applicants can expect to earn up to £2,000, get 300 hours of teaching practice and come away with a recognised TEFL qualification.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19336546-ADNFCR
