Travelling without insurance branded false economy

Posted 28 Aug 2009

People heading abroad to teach English are among those who may benefit from new advice from the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

A spokesperson has advised all travellers that corner-cutting on cover is not a good way to save money.

He said: "[Travel insurance] is not something that can be regarded as an add-on or a luxury.

"It should be something that is regarded as central integral part of planning any trip overseas."

As well as branding it a false economy, he went as far as to suggest people who do take insurance risks are "acting recklessly", especially in light of the health and financial implications of falling ill abroad without cover.

According to recent research from InsureandGo, 14 per cent of Brits travelled abroad in 2008 without being insured.

The top five travel problems encountered included medical issues, lost or stolen baggage, cancellation of flights, lost or stolen money and travel delays.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19336568-ADNFCR
