Brits looking to teach English abroad should research their project countries thoroughly before departing, it has been suggested.
Amelie Hurst, spokesperson for TripAdvisor, insists all travellers could do themselves a favour by being aware of cultural and legal differences.
She says: "For many holiday makers, researching the local customs and laws is an integral part of the trip-planning process.
"Our forums are bursting with travellers sharing first-hand tips on everything from the acceptability of topless sunbathing in a particular region, to whether or not public displays of affection are appropriate."
Ms Hurst adds that stopping to consider the consequences of certain behaviour could avoid serious brushes with the law.
According to figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as a proportion of the number of visitors, Britons were most likely to be arrested in the United Arab Emirates and Thailand.
TEFL teachers looking for country advice could consult the Know Before You Go campaign, which offers tips on how to prepare properly for foreign travel and avoid preventable problems.
