Last weekend’s civil unrest in Bangkok should have little impact on the safety of tourists in the country, the chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito) has said.
Derek Moore emphasised to the Travel Trade Gazette Online that foreign travellers were not being specifically targeted by protestors – news which may come as a relief to TEFL teachers about to embark on placements in Thailand.
"The underlying point is that there is internal instability in Thailand at the moment. While that remains the case, things like this may flare up again," Mr Moore conceded to the news source.
However, he maintained: "It is not targeted at tourists."
Bangkok is still in a state of emergency following clashes between the police and so-called ‘red shirts’, who support exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Following threats of a major military showdown, protest leaders on Tuesday (April 14th) urged their followers to go home and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has since reported on its website that it no longer advises "against all but essential travel to Bangkok".
