Preparation and research are key to avoiding brushes with the law when travelling abroad, ABTA – The Travel Association maintains.
A spokeswoman for the organisation suggests anyone thinking of heading overseas, including TEFL teachers, should make sure their behaviour does not contravene local customs and laws.
She suggests having a good look at the Foreign Office website is one way of knowing exactly what to expect.
"If people come prepared and think about the countries which you are going to, they are less likely to get into trouble once they’re out there," she says.
Her comments follow new statistics released by the Foreign Office this week, which appear to show a general ignorance of local customs when it comes to holidaying abroad.
According to the organisation, one in seven men have admitted to having sex in a public place while abroad and half of all women who sunbathe topless do not check whether this is permissible in the country first.
