Training can help NEETS gain self-esteem

Posted 29 Oct 2010

Training and education can be a good way to develop the confidence of young people not in education, employment or training (NEETS), suggests an expert.

The Prince's Trust revealed on October 27th that one in five young people feel isolated in their communities and one in ten believe they are outcasts in their local area.

It also found that NEETs are more likely to feel this way as 46 per cent of young people on jobseeker's allowance do not feel part of the community.

One way in which a youngster could get out of this environment and gain their confidence is to take a TEFL course as it trains them to teach English abroad.

Anne-Marie Douglas, regional development manager of the Brathay Trust, said: "Education and training allows NEETS to develop their self-esteem, communications skills and their ability to influence and possibly become part of the decision-making process within their local community."

She added that the main barrier amongst disadvantaged young people is that they lack aspiration as their families have a history of unemployment.

NEETS could try to break away from this cycle of joblessness and find work teaching English abroad after completing a TEFL course.
