Thousand of straight A students could miss out on uni

Posted 16 Aug 2010

Higher education minister David Willetts has warned that thousands of youngsters who get straight As on Thursday August 19th may not get into university this year.

This is perhaps due to the 11 per cent surge in the number of people applying to university and the announcement that some higher education establishments are already 'full', which means less places through clearing will be avaliable.

However, if someone ends up being disappointed by not getting into university, there are other options including taking a gap year or TEFL course.

Taking a TEFL course will help youngsters learn how to teach English abroad and will provide them with job opportunities. This could make a gap year productive.

Mr Willetts said: "It is going to be very tough this year, I don't disguise that. Last year there were 160,000 young people who applied and didn't get a place. It could be a greater number this year."

Tom Hall, editor for Lonely Planet, stated last week that universities should not discourage students from taking a year out as they can help people get a broader experience of the world.
