Those teaching abroad this summer ‘may not be affected by BA strikes’

Posted 30 Jun 2010

Those moving abroad this summer to teach English may be reassured that the British Airways (BA) strike scheduled for August could be postponed.

On June 27th, Unite, the trade union, announced that it would be postponing the ballot to decide whether to strike or not in order to consider a new offer by the airline.

BA has said it will increase cabin crew pay over the next two years and ensure that conditions and promotion opportunities for existing staff remain.

Tony Woodley, Unite’s joint general secretary, said: "We hope that postponement of the strike ballot will give BA time to reflect on what more they need to do to restore peace and stability to this company."

There are still some issues that need to be sorted before a peace deal is reached between the two sides including the restoration of travel perks to strikers.

However, even if the deal falls through, a strike could not be arranged until the autumn so those moving abroad to teach English this summer should avoid travel chaos.

BA was ranked 11th out of 18 most satisfactory airlines in a recent survey by Which?
