Thomas Cook feels the effects of a bad year for travel

Posted 29 Sep 2010

Thomas Cook, the travel operator, is estimated to make between £390 million and £400 million this year, which is down from £414.1 million last year.

Manny Fontenla-Novoa, chief executive of the firm, stated that this was the "worst year for travel" due to the volcanic ash cloud, the election and weak consumer confidence.

Therefore, some jobs may be cut although Mr Novoa has not made a comment on the figures.

He said: "Every chief executive I speak to is taking a fairly pessimistic view of the year ahead and they're all into self-help."

More than 15,000 workers are employed by the company over the peak summer period and at least 13,000 for the rest of the year.

Jobs in the company's shops, booking call centres and in the resorts are unlikely to be affected but some could be faced with unemployment.

Those that are faced with this situation could consider taking a TEFL course as it gives them qualifications to teach English abroad and could add some sought-after skills to a CV.

Suffolk Council has recently announced that 12,000 jobs could be lost as it plans to outsource its services in order to reduce costs by 30 per cent.
