Thailand ‘love capital of the world’ for British expats

Posted 30 Nov 2009

Those teaching English abroad in Thailand are more likely to find love than their counterparts living in other countries of the world.

These are the findings of the HSBC International Expat Survey, which also showed that Thailand is the best place for Brits hoping to make friends while living and working overseas.

One in five expats have found love while abroad, the research discovered, with almost half of those who have lived in Thailand saying that they had a romantic relationship while in the country.

This is compared to the four per cent of Brits that found love in India and Qatar.

Expats are most likely to find love if they earn less, the poll also discovered, as a quarter of those on salaries of US$60,000 (£36,000) or lower were found to have discovered romance while abroad.

Additionally, one in four expats aged 55 and over met their life partner while living abroad.

This news comes after Shelter Offshore last week advised expats not to think that they will fit in right away, but instead adopt more realistic expectations of their new lives abroad.
