People with TEFL certificates may be required to teach English in the primary schools of Vietnam.
That is because a recent survey, conducted by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, found that natives are reluctant to teach in primary schools.
VietNamNet reports that out of 50 students taking an English major no one wanted to teach English in primary schools.
Those polled stated they would prefer to teach English in high schools or colleges as there is more opportunity for job promotion at these establishments.
Therefore, TEFL teachers could be recruited instead as they may only want to work abroad for a year or so and just gain experience.
English teachers pay will also be higher than that received by normal teachers as the government wants to encourage language classes.
The education department in Vietnam is trying to implement a pilot programme to teach English to all students from grade three onwards.
